Alex Ovechkin wasn’t done after scoring in the first period and recording his 20th career 30-goal season in the NHL.
After a sensational setup by Connor McMichael, Ovechkin lit the lamp again 3:47 into the final frame, giving the Washington Capitals a 5-3 lead over the Philadelphia Flyers.
The goal would stand up as the game-winner in the Capitals’ 6-4 victory.
Ovechkin’s 928th career goal came after a fortunate bounce. Jakob Chychrun sent what appeared to be an indirect shot toward Ovechkin, hoping for a redirect as the Capitals captain was skating towards the net. Instead, the puck deflected off Jamie Drysdale’s skate and went right to McMichael, set up just below the left circle.
McMichael then fed Ovechkin a no-look pass at the far post, and the NHL’s all-time goals leader dove to chip the puck past Flyers goaltender Dan Vladar.
As he slid on his rumpus and the goal horn blared, Ovechkin raised his stick triumphantly and flashed a big smile as Capital One Arena roared. McMichael and Chychrun were credited with the assists.
For Ovechkin, the game-winner marked his fifth of the 2025-26 season and the 141st of his career, extending his NHL record. The next closest player is Jaromir Jagr, who finished his career with 135.
