Cody Gakpo looks set to stay at Liverpool after the club rejected a bid for the forward from Manchester City, sources told ESPN.

Gakpo has been linked with a move away from Anfield all summer, with both City and Tottenham Hotspur interested in the Netherlands international.

City ramped up discussions with Liverpool over the weekend after they received encouragement that Gakpo would be interested in a move to the Etihad.

However, Liverpool were only prepared to sanction the 27-year-old's exit if they could find a suitable replacement and, having so far failed to do so, sources told ESPN the club rejected a bid of ÂŁ75 million plus ÂŁ5m in add-ons on Monday.

Liverpool had sounded out a number of potential options to bolster their forward line, including Brighton & Hove Albion's Yankuba Minteh and Crystal Palace's IsmaĂŻla Sarr, but were unable to agree a fee with either club.

Gakpo's future at Liverpool has been thrown into uncertainty by the arrival of left-winger Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, in a package worth ÂŁ106m plus add-ons potentially rising to ÂŁ17m.
