Jarrad Branthwaite has seemingly suffered a ‘more serious’ hamstring injury, it has been suggested.

The Everton defender sustained a devastating setback in the 2-1 Merseyside derby loss to Liverpool. When the score was locked at 1-1, Branthwaite went down clutching his hamstring after challenging for possession with Cody Gakpo. The England international had to leave the Hill Dickinson Stadium pitch on a stretcher and was replaced by Michael Keane.

Branthwaite missed the first half of the 2025-26 season because of a hamstring problem and had to undergo the knife. Everton have been cautious since the 23-year-old returned to full fitness to try to ensure another fitness problem was avoided.

According to popular social media account PhysioScout, Branthwaite was ‘palpating his upper to mid-portion’ of his hamstring, which was not a good sign. If the former Carlisle United man has picked up a grade three tear then he could well miss the start of the 2026-27 campaign.

A post on X said: “Jarrad Branthwaite had to be stretchered off with a right hamstring injury in Everton’s clash vs. Liverpool. Branthwaite previously required surgery on that hamstring, and David Moyes has already said he fears this latest issue could be serious.

“He was seen palpating his upper to mid-portion area of his hamstring, which usually indicates a more ‘serious’ issue. Possible Recovery Times: Grade 1: 2-4 weeks. Grade 2: 6-8 weeks. Grade 3: 4 months+.

“Given the previous surgery and the reaction to the injury, this does not look like just tightness. Branthwaite will need scans to determine the extent of the injury.”

Speaking after the game, Everton boss David Moyes said via evertontv: “Jarrad was probably the best player on the pitch. I thought he played so well. I’m worried it could be serious, but we’ll have to wait and see.” Moyes added at his post-match press conference: “[There’s no update] but I’m worried, though. We’ve not had any results.”
