Moisés Caicedo is poised to hand Chelsea a significant boost by signing a new contract and reaffirming his commitment to the club.

Telegraph Sport understands that Caicedo has agreed the terms of a new deal, which will extend his commitment and recognise his performances with a pay rise, with Chelsea preparing an official announcement.

Caicedo has recently changed representation to the Base agency, which also looks after Cole Palmer, and he becomes the second star Chelsea player to agree a new contract in the past month after captain Reece James.

News of Caicedo’s contract could not come at a better time for Chelsea’s BlueCo owners after Enzo Fernández and Marc Cucurella raised doubts over the direction of the club, and ahead of a fan protest before Saturday’s game against Manchester United.

Asked about his future during the recent international break, Caicedo said: “I’m focused on my club right now. I have a contract with my club, and I want to do well. I want to be a legend, God willing.”

Chelsea paid a British record £115m to sign Caicedo from Brighton in August 2023 on an initial eight-year contract and the midfielder has established himself as one of the best players in the world in his position. His new deal is expected to run to 2033.

Telegraph Sport reported at the end of last season that Caicedo was in line for a new contract, but issues over his representation delayed an agreement before he joined the Base agency this month.

Chelsea will hope that Caicedo can now return to his best form for a crucial run of games that starts against United, with the club currently outside the Champions League qualification places.

Current standings

Liam Rosenior, the Chelsea head coach, has previously outlined the importance of Caicedo to his plans, saying: “For me, Moisés is one of the best defensive midfield players, if not the best defensive midfield player, in world football. That’s because of his intelligence, his physicality, his technical quality, and how he understands the game.”

Caicedo is expected to be partnered in midfield by Fernández on Saturday after the Argentine served a two-game ban for placing doubt on his own future by suggesting he would like to join Real Madrid.

Rosenior said: “Enzo has been training with the group, he’s been training very, very well and it’s just business as usual in terms of the selection for the game.”

Caicedo’s faith in Chelsea’s project is not yet matched by the club’s supporters’ trust, which has written an open letter to the owners demanding answers over a number of issues and warning they have not earned the trust of fans.

The letter says: “Chelsea supporters have been asked to accept an unprecedented level of change in the name of a long-term vision that has never been clearly or consistently explained. Four years on, that vision has still not earned their trust.

“This is not a reaction to a single result or a run of form. It reflects a deeper and more sustained concern about the direction of Chelsea Football Club, and the growing lack of confidence among supporters in the leadership, structure, and strategy that underpin it.”

The letter adds: “Supporters have watched relentless upheaval. Players, managers, staff, and structures have changed at pace. This has been presented as part of a long-term plan.

“Yet four years on, there is still no sufficiently clear or convincing explanation of how that plan delivers sustained success while preserving a recognisable Chelsea identity.

“The vision remains unclear, its execution inconsistent, and its leadership insufficiently accountable.”

The letter also acknowledges Saturday’s protest by a group of supporters who will be joined by representatives of fan groups of Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg.

“Not all supporters will choose to express their views in this way,” says the letter. “However, the organisation and scale of such activity is a clear signal that frustration is deepening and becoming harder to ignore. That should concern everyone responsible for the leadership of this football club.”

The letter finishes with: “Chelsea Football Club’s ownership and senior leadership have had time, money, upheaval, and a clear warning from their supporters. They have not yet earned trust.

“It is the responsibility of those who lead the club to address that now – clearly and decisively.”
