Behind the winner, how close was that for second?

Git Maker got the verdict by a nose from Kim Roque, which was still a fine result for Jamie Snowden to add to his already strong season.

It’s hard to say the Joseph O’Brien team will have any complaints with 4-1 favourite Kim Roque’s third too.

The result also meant it wasn’t to be for punters, as the favourites’ clean sweep of the major National races fell short after wins for Soldier In Milan and I Am Maximus in the Irish National and Grand National respectively.

Isaac Des Obeaux, who had won the Midlands National last time out, might have finished closer than fourth but for a terrible blunder at the third last when in the lead, after which he never really got going again.

It’s a massive win for Sean Houlihan and the owners, but how about for Philip Hobbs and Johnson White, who picked up their biggest prize yet as joint trainers.

Johnson White said: “My god, we’re going to enjoy days like this when they come around.

“Fantastic team of owners and just over the moon for everyone.

“It opens up lots of options for next year. We didn’t know about the ground or the trip, and now we do.”

Don’t you just love it when a syndicate wins a big race? I certainly do.

One member of the winning syndicate was rather emotional when speaking to ITV.

He said: “The coolest man was Sean Houlihan. I’ve still got tears in my eyes - we won’t forget this day.

“Thank you to Philip Hobbs and Johnson White for giving us an unbelievable experience.”

Karl Burke on John Porter winner Convergent speaking on Sky Sports Racing.

"The run in Germany was bad but he was a shell of a horse that day and the ground was bottomless. He's been working really well with some good horses and Clifford [Lee] couldn't pull him up there. I think he's a Group 1 horse in the making."

The Coronation Cup is "high up on the list of targets" and he "wouldn't be surprised" to see him end up in races like the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Coolmore's British representative Kevin Buckley has reflected on Albert Bartlett's performance in the Greenham Stakes.

"He's run creditably in a muddling race. We have to be happy with that. We'll let Ryan speak with Aidan and the owners and then a decision will be made about which route we're going to go.

"Ryan didn't want to commit until he's spoken with Aidan and the owners. I suppose we could still go either way. He has run a good race, though, I think."

Eve Johnson Houghton on Greenham runner-up Zavateri:

"I'm thrilled with him. He's trained on clearly. He got the trip and should get the mile, so we're delighted," she said.

However, no decision will be made until next week on whether she targets Zavateri at Newmarket (for which he's 25-1) or the Curragh for the Irish 2,000 Guineas, for which he is 8-1.

I have seen nothing this week to put me off Bow Echo's chances, while Venetian Sun would be my early pick in the first British fillies' Classic.

How many winners will Sean Bowen have today?

He's off the mark in the opener at Ayr and has some interesting rides today, for all Gabbys Cross looks to have a lot to do in the big one.

Matata is being walked back in after being attended to on course.
