Arne Slot‘s future has been brought back into focus after the Merseyside derby victory, while Mo Salah‘s successor has reportedly been identified by Liverpool.

Arne Slot expected to continue as Liverpool head coach

It has been a season with little to cheer about for Liverpool, but Slot’s side are edging closer to ensuring they are in the Champions League again next season.

Despite the unrest and disillusionment among the supporter base, Sky Sports’ Vinny O’Connor, a regular face and voice during Slot’s press conferences, says the Dutchman is “expected to continue” in his role next season.

Sky states Slot “is set to retain the support of the hierarchy” to oversee another summer of change, with doubts “subsiding rapidly” as the European target starts to look realistic.

This follows on from the Athletic‘s David Ornstein explaining FSG would “ideally” like to keep Slot at the helm.

It is at odds with the growing calls for Liverpool to move on, with a lack of identity and connection fracturing the bond between the fans and the man in charge.

It will all come to a head in the summer, and it will become clear then whether reports from Europe – which expect Xabi Alonso to be appointed – or those from England prove right.

• Newcastle chiefs will hold a meeting with Eddie Howe next week as pressure grows with his season fizzling out – they’re 14th. You expect the same for Slot (Chronicle Live)

Liverpool FC: On this day

It was on April 21, 1962 that Liverpool secured the Second Division title and therefore promotion to the top-flight after eight years away.

In Bill Shankly‘s 100th league game as manager, two goals from Kevin Lewis meant Liverpool won 2-0 at Anfield against Southampton.

Two years later, they would be lifting the First Division, such was the rapid growth the Reds enjoyed under Shankly!
